The week from October 31 to November 4, 2017, has been proclaimed National Veteran Small Business Week.

The U.S. Small Business Administration and local partners including the Veterans Business Outreach Center of the Pacific (VBOC) and the Hawaii Small Business Development Center Network hosted a “Salute to Veterans” reception to celebrate both the extraordinary and everyday contributions of America’s veteran small business owners.

SBA District Director Jane Sawyer commented on military tradition of producing focused, motivated leaders who are able to adapt to changing environments, traits that are invaluable for launching and growing a business.  Today veterans represent 1 in 10 business owners in America.  Six million are employed by a veteran or veteran-owned businesses. These companies generate more than $1 trillion in sales every year.

Over the past year SBA has guaranteed nearly $1 billion in loans to veterans across the U.S. and is working to exceed this target this year by eliminating bank fees on loans up to $350,000 and cutting fees in half for larger loans.

Dennis Kwock, VBOC Director, presented the Hawaii Veterans Small Business Awards, after judges made selections after evaluating written nominations submitted earlier this year.

The inaugural year of the new Hawaii Veterans Small Business Awards was co-sponsored by the Hawaii SBDC Network and UH Hilo.

Participating in the program and delivering messages of gratitude and encouragement to the veteran small business owners were representatives from the offices of Senator Hirono, Senator Schatz, and Representative Gabbard.

Congratulations to all the winners and our thanks for your service and sacrifice.
